Teaching about Indigenous Peoples and Cultures
Teaching about other peoples and cultures is often challenging. For me this includes teaching courses on Indigenous peoples and cultures of North America, including those known as Native Americans, Indians, Aboriginals, and First Nations. With two main challenges (authenticity and place) in mind, I recently created a new course on Indigenous Peoples and taught it in a condensed seven-week term. The class met every Friday from 9:00 – 4:00 and focused on the First Nations of the Greater Vancouver area. Four days were spent off-campus and three were spent on-campus. read more…
Eating Culture: Sample Student Assignments for the Anthropology of Food
For those of you teaching courses on the anthropology of food, or food studies courses of any kind, we’re very pleased to share two potential student assignments with you. These were used by the author of Eating Culture, Gillian Crowther, in her second-year undergraduate course in the spring of 2013. They are extracted directly from her syllabus for the course, which focused on BC Lower Mainland food culture. read more…

Capturing the Attention of Students from Day 1
When I teach Introduction to Cultural Anthropology, I try to make the relevance of anthropology clear in every class. This starts on Day 1, just after I’ve stated my name and welcomed students to the class. With those rituals out of the way, I begin the first class with a pictures-only presentation titled “What I Did Last Summer.” read more…
